EOne signs first-look deal with indie producer 1984

the-grey-movie EOne have once again flexed their powerful industry muscles by signing an intriguing first-look deal with 1984, the indie production company behind Machine Gun Preacher, Dredd 3D, Killing Them Softly and The Grey.

From Deadline

The new multi-year financing and distribution deal with Canadian biggie eOne gives the latter first-look rights to 1984’s production slate, which this year includesCorsica ’72 from Skyfall writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade and the untitled female Expendables movie being penned by Dutch Southern. Under terms of the deal, eOne will distribute 1984 films in Canada, UK, Benelux, Spain and Australia, with the company’s foreign sales arm eOne Films International handling the rest of the world.

This is an interesting deal for eOne as it gives them access to an impressive slate of film with actors such as Brad Pitt, Liam Neeson and Gerard Butler. However, none of the films mentioned demonstrated any financial clout at the worldwide box-office so only time will tell whether this deal is worthwhile.

The latest film from 1984 was Broken City starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe, but it is yet another US box-office disappointment from the production company having only earned $18 million so far in the US.
