The Avengers may have hit its first bump on the road to greatness. The thought of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Hulk appearing in the same movie has been a catalyst for fan boy wet dreams for a few years now. It began in 2008 when Tony Stark made an appearance in The Incredible Hulk and has been building with the development of Thor and Captain America, and more recently with Joss Whedon in line to direct.
While we haven’t seen The Hulk on screen for a while it has been all but confirmed that the character will be in The Avengers, and may possibly be a villain at some point. Edward Norton has previously said that he liked that idea; however both Norton and fans may be disappointed as apparently Marvel has decided to move ahead with a different actor.
After all the careful groundwork that Marvel Studios has laid the last few years, and after the way they’ve built this great cast film after film, they’re going to make a colossal misstep at the finish line. According to Marvel sources, the company has decided that they are going to cast “an unknown” to play Bruce Banner and The Hulk in the film.
Thing is, according to these same sources, Whedon’s been meeting the cast, laying out his plans for the film, and so far everyone seems incredibly excited by what they’re hearing.
One of the people who Whedon met with was Norton, and I’d love to know what they talked about. What I do know is that both Whedon and Norton reported their enthusiasm back to Marvel, and according to some calls I made today, it even sounds like Norton was making serious plans with his agency to keep his dates clear. And then…
…nothing. Marvel made a decision to hire an unknown, and they informed Norton that they won’t be using him in the film.
Anyone up for the third re-casting of Bruce Banner within 7 years? I know i’m not.
Edward Norton has expressed his interest in returning so there must have been an issue during the deal making process. Marvel are known to be less than generous when it comes to paying cast, and Norton is known for heavy creative involvement having re-written the script for The Incredible Hulk himself.
We don’t know the full details yet but it would be in Marvel’s interest to have Norton return, especially after they’ve been building towards it over the last few years. The Hulk’s last outing may not have made Iron Man numbers at the box office but that doesn’t mean people have forgotten who the actor is.
What do you think about Edward Norton possibly not reprising his role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers?
