Formerly titled All You Need is Kill (a better title IMHO), the newly (and more generically) titled sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow has just debuted its first trailer and it’s pretty darn impressive. Though his films still perform like gangbusters internationally, Tom Cruise’s last few action movies not called Mission: Impossible have all failed to hit the $100 million mark domestically. They’ve come close: Oblivion ($89 mil), Jack Reacher ($80 mil), Knight & Day ($76 mil), and Valkyrie ($83 mil) – but there was a time when a movie starring Tom Cruise was a guaranteed $100 million earner. If Edge of Tomorrow is as good as it looks, this just may be the one that puts Cruise back on top.
Live, Die, Repeat:
Here’s the official Edge of Tomorrow synopsis:
The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
Based on the novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton and Jeremy Piven. Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) directs from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie, Jack Reacher), Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci (Star Trek, Transformers), D.W. Harper and Joby Harold. The film hits theaters on June 6th, 2014.
