Over the past few months we’ve been hearing about Marvel’s post-Avengers plans, with recent talk of a Luke Cage movie being in the early stages of development. Now according to Deadline Marvel has hired Conan scribes Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write Dr. Strange. The duo also wrote a draft of the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys and Aliens which is currently in production.
In the comics Dr. Strange was a self-centered New York surgeon robbed of his touch after a car accident. After a stint as a wandering derelict, he found his way to a healer in the Himalayas, where he learned to tap into psychic powers to battle evil wizards and other wrongdoers. His mind is his weapon, rather than the brute force that distinguish most Marvel superheroes.
As the movie is in the very early stages of development it is not known whether Dr. Strange will be a part of the current Iron Man/Thor/Captain America universe, or whether it will be part of its own. Dr. Strange features a lot of magic and spells, which may not fit well with some of the past, present and future Marvel movies.
In 2008 Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct a Dr. Strange movie but it never came around. Now that he’s not busy with The Hobbit maybe Marvel could give him a call?
What are your thoughts on Marvel’s plans for a Dr. Strange movie? Who should play the master magician?
