Disney buy Marvel for $4 Billion

Disney recently looked at their finances and came to the conclusion that they haven’t had a good old spending spree since buying Pixar in 2006 for $7.4 billion. So they’ve decided to buy Marvel for $4 billion.

From ComingSoon:

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”

“We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,” Iger said.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”

UPDATE #1: In a conference call, the companies said that the deals for movies for characters at other studios (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and the other studios.

UPDATE #2: John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got “pretty excited, pretty fast.” They say there’s definitely an opportunity there.

UPDATE #3: The deal with Paramount Pictures to distribute “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “The Avengers” stays in place as well, but Disney would like to self-distribute down the line. “When the time comes we’ll take a closer look at it.” It was actually stated that the deal still included five films, so that is one more film after “The Avengers.”

What I found encouraging about this deal is that Walt Disney President Bob Iger said that Disney will have an “if it ain’t broke…” attitude when it comes to the future of Marvel films. This means the people making Marvel films now will still be making them, and Disney won’t be stepping in to make The Avengers kid friendly. This deal also means Marvel movies will have a lot more financing behind them in the future, and Disney know how to market movies worldwide.

What do you think about Disney buying Marvel? Is it a good move?

Its a very good thing for the movie fans of the marvel franchise. They provide Money, marketing and, what I think, respect for a franchise. Since the succes of Cooperation with Bruckheimer (Pirates, National treasure and upcoming Prince of Persia) Disney is pushing for the older audience. And with Tron and Alice ready to fire they propably searched for a franchise possibility...and why not a hundred of em.
Also like with pixar in 3d Animation they get one of the best in the printed area...they just make sure they dont lose important areas...I only see em telling marvel create and add some new kid oriented comics to their line.

...well and who knows maybe Disney puts out the pocket again and gets some good old movie rights back in the house of marvel like spiderman or xmen :)
I mean since they sure wanna get into that too, without loosing some sweet green on paramoun, they sure could start there :D

In before geek mob storming Disney's offices.
  • i dont know, i think it's a bit of a bad idea.
The best part of Pixar is their ability to make new IP, something that is very lacking in the Hollywood now, and if you make Pixar make comic book movies, I think it would devalue them as a production studio. But then again, I don't think you can make Pixar do anything they don't want to do.

If they don't mess with anything, it's a good move. Marvel fan boys are fa-reaking out on the Marvel.com forums, but Marvel is basically going to be under Disneys big, money wing. When I first read this, I got kind of nautious, but it's a good buisness move, now that I've had time to read into it and maul it over.

Honestly, what's probably going to happen is a few cross overs, nothing severe, and Marvel will reach more people around the world. More merchandice, more, (and better), gaming, amazing funding.. Also, more movie possibilities. You gotta think, Marvel went bank rupt once. Now Marvel's going to have deep, secure roots.

Bottom line, all the guys who were making the comics at Marvel yesterday are still going to be making the Marvel comics. The same movie guys are involved with the movies. >.> Not much is going to change, Disney's just gonna crazy pimp Marvel out, and let the company flourish. The only thing will be that Disney will have a cut of the profits, which sounds bad, but isn't really.

As much as I hate all the HSM and Hannah Montanna stuff, they're not gonna kid-friendly EVERYTHING. If anything, Disney's been trying to shake off the kid image.

This is a good buisness move, and hopefully not too much will change. Lots of companies are interlocked, and most people don't even know it. Like Future Shop and Best Buy. :3 They always play opposing forces, but they're owned by the same guys.

And I know this is a bad example, but when Nickalonian bought Neopets, the only thing that changed was there was far more merchandice, a lot more games, more games, and it was introduced in a bunch more countries. Actually, that's a great exmaple. >.>
  • Wow, I hope they don't clean up any of the Marvel violence or cussing that we have all grown to love.
  • Alot of people are scared that Marvel films will become "child-friendly" but they seem to be forgetting that Disney are a franchise and also own Miramax. There Will Be Blood wasn't child friendly, neither was Scary Movie 4, Doubt or Clerks 2.

Miramax hasn't become laden with Disney characters so why should we assume Marvel is going to

Okay, this guy is saying he thinks Thor, Captain America and Avengers might not even happen now. >_> But, he sounds like he has no basis for what he's talking about to be honest.
Disney keeps saying how they're not gonna touch the movies in production right now, and how they admired how successful Iron Man was, and how they want to bring more unknown characters into the light. O.o Anyway, I just wanted to hear someone elses' thoughts on this besides the rabid, drama queen fanboys that are saying it's the death of Marvel.

that guy is wrong Thor, Captain America and Avengers are not at Disney they still at Paramount Pictures for now and the movies are still coming out.

plus this guy saying that the movie will be PG instead of PG-13 thats bullshit. it will be stupid that Marvel will turn their characters to PG films. who wants to see Black Panter, Hawkeye, Dr Strange, etc turn into PG films that dont make sense. i think that guy talking too much before he thinks.

Disney is well known for Mickey Mouse and co but people forget that Warner Bros has Loony Tunes. Disney/Marvel is 2009 version of WB/DC thats what they doing with the company.

plus watch this video "Disney Announces Acquisition of Marvel Entertainment Inc"

Yeah and we also get Tron legacy, Alice and Prince of Persia in PG-13 ...and so was the Pirates Trilogy...all it proves is that Disney just makes more of a push in that area.
  • terry
yeah that guy in the video what vcurtz posted talks like he knows everything but he dont know shit and we prove it
  • Steevoger
Lol yeah we should make a rap video and sing about it :D
  • terry
hahah very funny we need to have the big booty girls dancing in our rap video plus we need to get 50 Cent and Kanye West to feature on the song to be number 1 LOL
  • Disney just keeps getting bigger!!!
  • Steevoger
They probably saw that Google and Microsoft are still more worth...so they keep buying shit till they on top^^
