David Yates to direct Tarzan for Warner Bros.

tarzan disney Image Earlier this year we heard that Harry Potter director David Yates was circling a new Tarzan adaptation at Warner Bros., which also had The Hunger Games director Gary Ross in contention. Well Vulture now reports that Yates has committed to the project and he’ll soon be meeting with actors to cast the title role.

Names being mentioned at the moment include Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) and Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood). The studio is also said to be seeking Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) but whether that leads anywhere will depend on his interest.

Footloose director Craig Brewer was attached last year and said the script he wrote was the best thing he’s ever written, but things obviously didn’t work out. I’m a big fan of Yates from his work on the last four Potter movies and have been waiting to see what he’ll tackle next. I don’t think we really need another Tarzan movie, but there’s a potential new franchise here for Warner Bros. if it moves ahead.
