While previous reports had suggested that Jason Momoa (Bullet to the Head) was in negotiations with Marvel for the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, the part has now gone to Dave Bautista. According to THR Bautista is the second actor to officially join the movie after Chris Pratt (Zero Dark Thirty) signed on as Star-Lord last month.
Dave Bautista will be known to many from his WWE days, and more recently for his switch to Mixed Martial Arts. Lately he’s been turning his attention to acting having appeared as a villain in The Man With the Iron Fists and he’ll be seen alongside Vin Diesel in Riddick later this year.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of superhuman and extra-terrestrial adventurers dedicated to the safeguarding of the Milky Way Galaxy from any force that threatens the security or liberty of its various people.
The team includes their leader Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer (a resurrected superhuman warrior and nemesis of Thanos), Groot (a plant monster who can control trees), Gamora (a dangerous female assassin who has a preference for knives and swords) and Rocket Racoon (a genetically altered racoon who can fly a plane and carries a laser pistol).
With an August 2014 release date set we can expect more casting announcements soon. James Gunn (Super) is directing.
