That’s a good point Ando. The same crowd that boycotted The Golden Compass seem to be the same crowd that turned Sandra Bullock’s schmultz-fest The Blind Side into a $250 million+ grosser.

Either that or Americans enjoy flocking to more misojynist films like Superbad, Knocked Up and The Hangover, all three of those featured attempts to “knock up” a female character.

In other words it seems a shame that Stateside an inocent film like The Golden Compass played second (or third) fiddle to the more misojynist Knocked Up and Superbad in the same year.

I’ve just finished reading the last book and was left astounded. I agree with ‘Jez’. The Golden Compass was a great film that deserves to be finished on the big screen. I’ve heared all of the arguements that it didn’t do well in America because of the ‘anti-religion’ that is supposidly in the books. If people actually read the end of the trilogy, they would see that it’s about people who die are never truely forgotten, they join the paradise that is all around us, that is their ‘heaven’.

I think what’s actually happening is that the studio is waiting for the right time to film Subtle Knife i.e When the Potter/Twilight craze is done and dusted. There have been many other fantasy films that tried to replicate Potter or Rings but more often or not failed, most recently Eregon, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and The Last Airbender even though the latter 2 weren’t adaptations of best selling novels (one of them is a live action version of a Nickelodeon cartoon, the other is a Fantasia segment stretched over 90 minutes and turned into live action). The Golden Compass thrashed all of the aformentioned attempts.

The movie was Great!! The actors were great, and the effects were great!! I am alittle disappointed that it didn’t make enough money for the second movie to be made right away,, but with it airing on cable television, and people renting the movie,, I have no doubt in my mind that the sequels would do fantastic. I did not see the first film in theatres, but I would be there opening day for the subtle knife. I never read the books:: but I can’t be left hanging on such a heartful adventure :) please please please let there be a continuation!!!!! Also, I am a Methodist and I found no such insulting material some are talking about.. Some people will complain about anything!! I do, however, wish new line cinema hadn’t given the rest of the trilogy to Warner bros. They did just fine in my book themselves and should finish what they started!!

Make the freakin movies. We watched the dvd again the other day and we saw it in the theater and its a really good movie. Im a 32 year man and my 2 kids and i loved it. Ive never read the books so i cant complain like all people who read books do when a movie comes out so based on a strictly movie loving perspective we are very disappointed that there isn’t anymore films yet. It looks like a good bit of people agree and here we are three years later still wanting this next movie to come out so???

The sad fact is we are not overprivelaged and quickly vanishing. The only reason this really makes me comment about it on the Internet is because it’s being read by innocent children. Putting down Pullman doesn’t mean killing him; it means ignoring him and refusing to accept his rubbish. Christianity is not an empty religion; we are still full of life and fueled by an existing God. I don’t agree with your opinion, but I won’t knock you for it.

I think it was a case of poor timing. If it had come out in the summer, the Vatican wouldn’t have been as pissy about it as they did.

The question is if that happened, would The Golden Compass thrash The Dark Knight?

The Golden Compass did win a Bafta for it’s visual effects, so there was a hint that TGC could win Oscar’s equivilant.
