Coolness: Superbad Gets Epic

by Liam on June 20, 2008 · Comments

I love it when people re-cut trailers. It can turn a family friendly film such as Marry Poppins into a psycho horror, and a psycho horror such as The Shining into a family friendly film.

On this occasion someone has turned geeky comedy Superbad, into a rather cool looking action film. The re-cut trailer below shows the true power of a trailer, and how the marketing people could have actually marketed Superbad as an action film…kinda.

  • That's actually pretty damn awesome.... completely changed the tone of the film.
  • Isn't that what they're doing already? Some movies look so brilliant in their trailers only to end up being a pile of crap. Shame, really!

Here's the million dollar question though (okay, maybe only the $125,000 one, but still):

If Superbad WAS an action flick, would you still watch it and enjoy it as much?

uh, it's asshole like you who think like this that are to blame for our society's ills.

lolwut? All he's doing is talking about you can put a spin on anything to completely change its meaning. How exactly is he an 'asshole' let alone someone responsible for societies' ills? Please make logical arguments and at the *very* least make fucking sense when you post an attack.

Overall very good and brilliant in it's general concept and tone but pace and flow could be improved with better editing. Good job.

Holy crap... this movie was hilarious by itself, but man...if I had gone into Superbad from seeing this trailer, I think I would've been floored at the genius of the trailer/movie combo.

Hey all... I'm Marshall, and I created this trailer.

I originally put it on YouTube to get a grade for my editing class, and show it to a few friends. I had no idea Filmonic would post it under their "Coolness" section. I'm really shocked and pleasantly surprised.

For the comments, I'd just like to say this was my first time working on an AVID editing system. I wasn't given much -- a computer, some video clips, and a song. That's it. No microphone, no voiceover -- simple shots and music. So I edited it in a few hours using a system that required knowledge of the AVID keyboard. I had no idea how to use the volume tool, fade effect, or the text tool, but I did the best I could.

If I had edited this on Final Cut Pro, which I am familiar with, it would have turned out differently. For now, this is just an experiment that lots of people are checking out.

Thanks for watching, and I appreciate all the comments and criticism.
  • Hey Marshall, thanks for posting!

I was browsing YouTube and watched your video and though it was amazing, so posted it.

I didn't expect it to get this much attention! :D

    Hey Liam!

I had no idea it would get so many hits, either! I'm still in a state of shock.

That is incredibly awesome of you to post it. Thanks so much; I'm very grateful. Glad you thought it was worthwhile. :-D

    Thanks again!

    Well done young Jedi!

    Friggin Awesome. End of story.
  • This is awesome. Have you seen that "Requiem for a Day Off" video that's been getting some attention lately? It's like 4 minutes long, it takes clips from Ferris Bueller but puts them over the Requiem for a Dream music. Really awesome and creepy.
  • I saw that trailer yes, although I haven't seen Ferris Bueller so it didn't have the same impact on me :D
