In this featurette for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets writer/director/producer Luc Besson talks about bringing his favorite comic growing up to life.
It was obvious from the very first shots in the debut trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets that this would be Luc Besson’s return to his The Fifth Element sci-fi roots 20 years later with a movie that looked like an updated version of that. It turns out there’s a very good reason these two films look so similar, not only were the Valerian and Laureline comics a huge influence on The Fifth Element, to create that world he worked with the comic’s illustrator Jean-Claude Mezieres. That alone makes me very excited for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The Fifth Element is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies and I really hope Valerian can stand alongside it.
Luc Besson wrote and directed Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets based on the comic ‘Valerian and Laureline’ written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mezieres. Starring in the $200+ million movie are Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Rutger Hauer, Rihanna and many more.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets comes to theaters starting July 21st in the US and around the world. According to Luc Besson the movie already made back most of its massive budget with pre-sales (to distributors), around 96% he says, so even if it’s not a hit at the box office, it shouldn’t be a problem for his studio.
