We were due some news on Jurassic Park 4 as the film is scheduled to be released in 15 months, and now Deadline has revealed that Colin Treverrow will direct and Universal is presumable still aiming for a June 2014 release.
Colin Treverrow is an unexpected choice, but it continues the trend of studios hiring indie directors to helm big budget franchises. Treverrow is responsible for Safety Not Guaranteed which starred Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass. It screened at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and made $4 million when it was released by FilmDistrict in June 2012.
Deadline details how Treverrow landed the gig:
Why Treverrow? He met with the studio and filmmakers, and they felt he was a good match for the material, having grown up a huge fan of the trilogy and part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur. They felt he would preserve and protect the characters in the story they created.
Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, writers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, were hired to write the script and Steven Spielberg is producing. Expect casting news in the very near future.
