“How I Met Your Mother” star Cobie Smulders is working on a deal to join Joss Whedon’s superhero team-up film The Avengers. What role will she play? Hit the jump to find out.
Deadline reports that Smulders is close to securing the role of SHIELD agent Maria Hill. Just a few days ago, a small announcement was made that multiple actresses were vying for this role, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Morena Baccarin, and Jessica Lucas. But Smulders now appears to be the frontrunner, based in part on her history with Joss Whedon. Years ago, the director was attached to a Wonder Woman film and had Smulders in mind for the lead role; unfortunately, that project fell through, but it’s clear that the actress made an impression.
Of course, her deal will include options to appear in multiple films after The Avengers, and production begins on the highly anticipated superhero epic in April of this year for a May 4th, 2012 release.
[A separate bit that may interest Marvel fans: Tom Hiddleston (Loki in the upcoming Thor) has been confirmed as a villain in The Avengers.]
I’m not familiar with the character of Maria Hill, so I want to hear from you. Marvel fans – do you think Smulders is a good fit for this part?
