DF-00062.CR2The trailer for Out of the Furnace, which features Christian Bale in his first post-Batman role, has arrived online and it looks like potential awards bait; being an edgy crime-drama with a stellar cast of Oscar winners. The film is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) and in addition to Bale, also stars Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Willem Dafoe, Sam Shepard, and Forest Whitaker.

Here’s the synopsis:

Russell (Christian Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) live in the economically-depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.

The film is being backed by an A-list producing team including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ridley Scott, and Tony Scott (one of the last films he produced before his death). At one point DiCaprio was attached to star and Ridley Scott to direct, but a long pre-production process caused the two to drop out, yet remain onboard as producers.

The film will be released in a limited engagement on November 27th to build word-of-mouth, then expand nationwide on December 6th.
