Christian Bale gets a bit angry on the Terminator Salvation set

by Liam on February 2, 2009 · View Comments

terminator salvation bale worthington We know Christian Bale has a temper after he was arrested before the European première of The Dark Knight last year, however now we have audio proof of his rage. The audio below begins with Bale getting angry at Terminator Salvation’s director of photography Shane Hurlbut, after he walked on set during filming of a scene. We can only judge from this audio as we don’t know how Bale was that day, whether he had been filming for a long time and was tired, or whether he was just having a bad day. However he exploded and even director McG couldn’t control him.

Listen below:

[Warning: contains f-word, threats of violence and a dodgy English/American accent from Bale]

Update: Assistant director and associate producer Bruce Franklin has given his thoughts. From E! Online:

“If you are working in a very intense scene and someone takes you out of your groove…It was the most emotional scene in the movie,” said Franklin. “And for him to get stopped in the middle of it. He is very intensely involved in his character. He didn’t walk around like that all day long. It was just a moment and it passed.

“This was my second movie with Christian, and it has always been a good experience with him,” added Franklin, who also worked with the actor on 2000’s Shaft. “He is so dedicated to the craft. I think someone is begging to make some noise about this, but I don’t think it’s fair. The art of acting is not paint by numbers, it’s an art form. “

It's really not that hard to get it. Actors, good ones, are very emotional. Doing a climax scene like this it's understandable. It's not like he beat up the guy, he's not an asshole he's just emotional. If u can get pissed in an everyday situation imagine how annoying it can be when u're actually trying to perform artistically and need 100% concentration.. How can u do ur job when u are being annoyed and distracted? Recently i was trying to write a short story when my power went off and screwed 1 hour of writing.. was so pissed off couldnt even rewrite what i had already done. That made me even more mad, it really sux i tell u. One should not be messed with when they're trying to perform artistically.

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm getting slammed with assloads of people angry at me for not posting the Bale explosion from the set of McG's TERMINATOR: SALVATION. Well, first off - there's a real simple reason. It isn't news. And it certainly isn't cool news. It is a moment in a man's life taken completely out of context and most likely leaked to personally embarrass Christian Bale. Now, I know what a lot of you are thinking... There's no excuse for a temper tantrum like that to ever occur and if you are going to act that way, you deserve to be embarrassed by your own actions.

Except, you want to hear the REALITY behind that clip?

I know this because I happen to be somewhere where someone that was there that day and for the shoot is. And this person isn't a publicist, nor are they invested in Bale's career. They're just someone that thinks it is absolute bullshit that this moment in Bale's life is being aired and that the real story should get out there.
The DP on TERMINATOR SALVATION, Shane Hurlbut, is a apparently a light tweaker. He's a fairly young DP and likes to fiddle with his lights on set during action, which is a big "NO NO" on most productions unless worked out in advance with performers. But apparently Shane was a pretty unrepentant light tweaker.
The scene in question, was a very emotional and tough scene between Christian Bale and Bryce Howard. A scene that required soul bearing and a deep level of immersive concentration. The sort of scene where everyone on set knows not to get in anyone's eye lines, and definitely not to move lights around while FILMING.

You lock that shit down before the scene starts.

Bale had indeed warned the DP on multiple occasions about messing with lights while the cameras were rolling, and Bale was in the midst of a painful scene with Bryce, what was described to me as being the emotional center of the film and his character for the film.

Now, the reason I know all of this is because the person that was there, felt that it should be made perfectly clear that Christian Bale was the utmost gentleman and cool guy on set. And the DP really was doing something that professional DPs with experience just don't do. Not during a performance.

You don't need me to give you a link, it's all over the internet, I just felt that you should know what really went down - and that this particular outburst did indeed modify the DP's behavior - and for future DPs. Fuck with the lights before and after your actors are acting. Not during.

Man i wish i was there - prick like should get beatin the fuck up - if i was that guy - bale would have end up head in the toilet - fucking ass hole mother fucker thinks he is a big man - blood come to the ghetto and try that - but i guess we won't coz he know's that he would get arms and head chopped off.__remember this peep if you fuck around always and everywhere be the same - not only with people that you can with.____The Lion

Sound's like he dint like bruce

First off to all the people saying they would have 'knocked his teeth down his throat'. No you wouldn't Bale is ripped like a mother fucker, and trained in martial arts, he'd most likely end you in a heart beat. Secondly people get mad, it's human nature. I think someone said 'it's unacceptable to treat a person that way', he did say 'You're a nice guy' it was his unprofesional behaviour that had frustrated him. Bale is an awesome actor and I think it's good to see how passionate he is about his work.

Well he obviously didn't leave the set as threatened. And I imagine they didn't just continue shooting with all that tension in the air.

So with those two reasoned assumptions in place I bet that Bale apologized after taking five and everything was JUST fine. That is until this recording went public and the internet is all nattering about like a bunch of geriatrics.

    "Oh my stars! What profanity!"

Bale has worked on many movies, several of this caliber, and whatever this DP did I imagine it was out of line. Granted that is an extreme response (Extreme in tone but it isn't like he threatened with violence or made personal insults) but I don't know what was going on with Bale that day. He has his family issues and I imagine just coming off The Dark Knight he's getting fatigued. This is likely a contained incident otherwise nobody would work with him. (See David O. Russell)

The problem is that people need to take a stand to stop working with him or others that act like this (or stop watching their movies)...i won't mention any other names...James Cameron...did that just slip out? Teach them a lesson. If the studios would take a moral stance and teach them that this is unacceptable behavior then there would be much less of this going on. Unfortunately they get away with it once and then it just gets worse and worse. There are others that are completely the opposite...Tom Hanks...a complete charm to work with and you should see how people will bend over backwards and go above and beyond to do a great job and support that actor in whatever way he want or needs. I've seen the craziest things done for other actors that are also a pleasure to work with... They will fly in Brazilian water that has been hand bottled by a native priest within 10 seconds of having left the earth. It's pretty amazing what one can get when one thinks of others first.

Well perhaps it's just a difference of philosophy then. But I would also like to mention that Stanley Kubrick was notoriously assholish when making his movies up to the point of Eyes Wide Shut and we all know how that was when Tom and Nicole took reign. I bet Kirk Cameron is a nice guy but I'm not going to be seeing his movies.

Personally I like seeing an actor care more about his work than his paycheck. It isn't like he was freaking out over a brand of bottled water he recieved. This DP was repeatedly distracting him and in the case of this audio clip, distracting during the most crucial scene.

You know, I enjoyed Mr. Bale's movies from the time I first saw equilibrium. I guess if anything, this ouutburst just goes to prove that characters played by actors really DOES reflect his personality. That is, anyone who has watched this guy's movies, knows that he is almost always cast as a very , very intense and obsessive character.

Christian Bale got angry and started shouting the stars down. This certainly isn't anything new to us. Heck there's a professor in my college that swears at us almost twice a week.. but we don't bother with it, we still ask him questions, and he answers them, we get on with life, and the professor sometimes even jokes about himself.

There's no denying now though, that Bale is an angry man. But it takes different people to make the world, andand everything isn't always smiles and hugs. This certainly cannot be an exception in Hollywood. There are some actors you never hear bad news about, some that are ALWAYS making bad news, and others that explode every now and again.

    Well said Sean~

Tell 'em how it is, Sean. Bunch of fanboys.

BS!! All of you that are defending him could use the same argument for slapping your wife! "He was caught in the moment" What, normal people don't have moments in daily life? Only those in the industry can understand being caught in an emotional state? Seriously, if you are an asshole, you are an asshole and clearly listening to this tape, this is how this man responds to life's stresses. It's not the first time we've heard about it. So stop making excuses. If you are going to support him and his films at least admit that he was a complete tool and overstepped the line here, don't spin it out to be Hollywood fantasy.
  • Eddie
Have any of you idiots even heard of method acting?

You have no right to even listen to this if you weren't on the set at the time, let alone judge Bale on it. What a bunch of hypocrites. Especially the guy who "works in theatre".
  • cam
I don't care how unprofessional the DP was, Bale was threatening and acting like a complete ass. God, If only one job a time can be achieved on set, no wonder these movies have huge budgets. BTW, I work in theatre. No less of a 'craft', but stfu if you can't work with distractions.
  • Alex
Damn, Christian went nuts, but I don't blame him. There were better ways to handle that situation and that's where he went wrong.
  • Gavin
Personally, as an beginning actor (albeit in stage), I understand where Bale is coming from. If this was the most emotional scene in the film, and he had to get involved in it, and he was distracted, he's likely to snap. I don't think this is likely to represent his character as a whole, just when he's stressed out and frustrated. Admittedly, he didn't handle it well, but the guy he's going off on should have known better.
  • Bryan
If you've ever been on a set, then you'd know to stay out of the actor's line of sight when they are filming. It's incredibly distracting, it breaks your focus, and when you spend so much energy to get yourself into the right frame of mind, having some amateur wandering around, breaking your reality, is genuinely unacceptable. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that lashing, but the DP did this multiple times. If I were Bale, I would have been furious as well. You tell somebody not to do something once, it shouldn't be a problem - and it wouldn't have if the DP cared about his craft.
  • Rachel Bowman
Give him hell, Bale! The rest of you pussies who are giving him grief have never seen a major Hollywood film set, let alone worked on one.
  • GiveMeABreak
Uh Yeah we have...and it's pretty apparent that you haven't. This is unacceptable.
  • Hell yeah. I agree completely
