I’ve been trying to stay as spoiler-free as possible when it comes to The Dark Knight Rises because it’s my most anticipated film of the year (aside from Rian Johnson’s Looper). But this news story doesn’t really talk much about TDKR, only its director, Christopher Nolan. More than a year ago, we got word that Nolan and his wife/producing partner Emma Thomas would be producing future installments in the Batman franchise after he was done directing his trilogy. Well, now it seems that’s not the case after all. Read on to find out why.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Nolan revealed that this truly is the final time he’ll be involved with anything Batman-related. When asked if he was planning on being involved with the character at some point in the future, here’s what he said:
“No, none at all,” Nolan said. “We’re finished with all we’re doing with Batman. This is the end of our take on this character…Batman will outlive us all, and our interpretation was ours. Obviously, we consider it definitive and kind of finished. The great thing about Batman is he lives on for future generations to reinterpret, and obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they’re going to do with him,” Nolan said. “We’ve had our say on the character…I’ve got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any ‘Justice League’ project.”
Well, that’s gotta be a dagger through the heart of fans who were hoping that WB would task Nolan with bringing the Justice League to life after the success of Marvel’s The Avengers earlier this year. WB is definitely planning a Justice League film, it’s just a matter of when they can get their act together and start the ball rolling, and now we know that Nolan won’t be involved.
The news that he won’t produce any further iterations of Batman is sort of surprising, considering how cemented that news seemed to be last year, but I don’t begrudge on Nolan his decision. The man has spent nearly a decade working on this character, so I can totally see why he wants to spread out and do different things. Personally, I’m stoked about it because that means we’ll get more awesome movies like The Prestige and Inception coming soon and Nolan can really start forming his legacy outside of the shadow of the Bat.
