Last year Never Let Me Go and One Hour Photo director Mark Romanek became attached to a new live-action Cinderella movie at Disney, which came about thanks to a pitch by The Devil Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna. Now it looks like the re-imagining is edging closer to production as according to Deadline Cate Blanchett is being eyed to play the evil stepmother.
The film will probably follow the classic tale we know, with some modern tweaks along the way. The only summary we have so far is that “a prince is set for a politically arranged marriage, until the evil plan is threatened when the prince meets Cinderella”. No word on who’s being considered for Cinderella just yet, but it shouldn’t be too long until we hear names.
Cinderella is just another in the long line of re-imagined Disney classics in the pipeline, which started with Alice in Wonderland and resulted in two Snow White movies this year. There’s also Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, two Peter Pan movies, and a few Pinocchio movies in the works too.
Cate Blanchett will next be seen in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and will appear in projects by Terrence Malick and Woody Allen in 2013.
