According to Variety Frank Grillo has joined the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the villain Crossbones, a highly trained mercenary and New York gang leader who in the comics works for the Red Skull.
Last year Grillo appeared in The Grey and Warrior and was recently seen in End of Watch. He’ll next star in Gangster Squad and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty.
The report by Variety also confirms we’ll be seeing some familiar faces from S.H.I.E.L.D., with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill all returning.
With Tony Stark facing some personal battles in Iron Man 3 and Thor defending the nine realms in Thor: The Dark World the involvement of S.H.I.E.L.D. will probably be limited in those films, but for The Winter Soldier it seems they’ll be integral to the plot. The film will follow Steve Rogers in the present day as he tracks down Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan in the first film, who has return as a brainwashed Soviet assassin known as the Winter Solider. Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) will help Captain America as Falcon.
Anthony and Joe Russo (Community and Arrested Development) are directing the sequel, and Captain America: The First Avenger screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus wrote the script.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will hit April 4, 2014.
