The official Facebook page for Rio 2 has announced that Andy Garcia (The Untouchables, Oceans Twelve) and musician Bruno Mars are the latest big names to have signed up for 20th Century Fox’s animated sequel. They will join Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Jesse Eisenberg and will.i.am who are all reprising their roles from the first outing.
In 2011, Rio became a global success after grossing $484 million worldwide though it was by no means a great film. It was a light-hearted comedy and perfect for children, but it will be interesting to see whether the success can be at least equalled with the sequel.
The plot for Rio 2 is said to focus on macaws Blu (Eisenberg) and Jewel (Hathaway) living a domesticated life with three chicks in the Brazilian city. However, their comfortable life is short-lived, as Jewel decides that their children need to learn to live like real birds and proposes that the family relocate to the Amazon rainforest. As Blu tries to adapt to his new surroundings, he begins to worry he may lose his family to the wild for good.
Rio 2 is scheduled for release in Brazil on 28th March 2014, and will be released in the UK on 4th April and US on 11th April 2014. The film will obviously seek to capitalise on the global focus on Brazil, thanks to the country hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.
