The Bourne spin-off was somewhat underwhelming over the weekend with just $38.1 million and The Campaign hit a new best for political satires in 2nd place. Meanwhile, as expected, The Dark Knight Rises dropped to 3rd place.
Despite the great legacy left behind by the Matt Damon Bourne trilogy, The Bourne Legacy failed to meet its expectations. On Saturday morning the film looked like it would open somewhere around $46 million. That number went down with each hour, finally settling at $38.1 million. When a flick like this is adjusted down all weekend, you know it’s a bad sign and in this case it could spell mediocre box office legs for The Bourne Legacy. For a better picture we must wait for this film’s 2nd weekend. Based on that drop we will be able to tell where this spin-off might end its box office run. Right now even $100 million in North America could be a lofty goal for The Bourney Legacy.

I can’t say the same about The Campaign, this comedy opened with $26.5 million which is a new record for political satires or films about elections. For its two lead actors, Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis, The Campaign falls somewhere in between their past releases, opening wise. Like The Bourne Legacy, this also got adjusted down over the weekend and it might have had something to do with the end of the Olympics. Again, waiting for next week to get a better picture.
3rd place belongs to The Dark Knight Rises, down 46.9% to $18.9 million. So far the trilogy finale has made $389.5 million in 24 days and it should hit the $400 million mark sometime this week, most likely over the next weekend.
Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell comedy Hope Springs opened in 4th place with $14.6 million and a 5-day total of $19.1 million. For Meryl Streep this didn’t fare as well as some of her past similar films such as It’s Complicated ($22.1 million opening) and Julie & Julia ($20 million).
Rounding out the top 5 was Total Recall, down a disappointing 68.7% for $8 million and only $44.1 million after 10 days. My crystal ball says this sci-fi remake might be out of the top 10 by next week, very likely outcome considering we’ll get 4 new wide releases.
