With an all-star cast and little competition, Prisoners was able to capture audiences this weekend. The English debut from French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve brought in $21.4 million. This is comparable to other September dramas The Town, Flightplan, and Contagion which ended up in the $75-90 million range.
Last week’s surprise hit Insidious Chapter 2 dropped 64% to $14.5 million in its second weekend. While it opened to strong numbers, it appears that the horror sequel will not reach the same level as The Conjuring or Paranormal Activity. Luc Besson’s action-comedy The Family decreased to $7 million while Spanish family film Instructions Not Included actually increased from last weekend to $5.7 million. By the end of the month, it should overtake Pan’s Labyrinth as the highest grossing film from Mexico.
The only other new wide release Battle of The Year came out about five years too late, and only managing to bring in $5 million. This number is closer to Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights than Step Up.
