Snow White and the Huntsman aims to be the fairest of them all this weekend at the box office and since there’s nothing else to counter it, things are clear regarding the top spot. In 2nd and 3rd Men in Black 3 and The Avengers keep fighting the good fight, but more of that after the break.
Remember last year how Universal and Relativity were trying to push their Snow White flicks one over the other, well in the end the latter came in first with Mirror Mirror in March and now it’s time for the other Snow to shine. Mirror Mirror had a bit of a disappointing opening with just $18.1 million and moving on to gross $62.5 million. Now Snow White and the Huntsman looks a lot more promising box office-wise, so I could see it doing more than double the opening of Mirror Mirror, maybe even go as high as $50 million. Actually I think that number sounds just about right for Snow White and the Huntsman.
Men in Black 3 should come in 2nd place with a 50% drop or so, maybe $25-26 million for a 10-day total of $108-109 million. At the same point Men in Black was at $118.7 million while Men in Black 2 had $115.6 million.
Maybe you know this, maybe you don’t, but Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor in The Avengers, happens to also be the huntsman in the new Snow White flick, so it must feel pretty good to be him having two films in the top 3 and all (must give his agent a raise). Anyway, The Avengers should be good for $20 million or so for the weekend, bringing the film to over $552 million after a single month in theaters. Also, sometime this morning (Friday) The Avengers became the highest grossing superhero film of all time in North America, a title previously held by The Dark Knight ($533.3 million) for almost 4 years.
Numbers 4 and 5 will belong to Battleship and The Dictator, both with $5 million or so.
Next weekend Ridley Scott returns to a genre he helped define more than 30 years ago with Prometheus, a prequel to the original Alien (1979). Meanwhile 4 crazy penguins, a lion, a giraffe, a zebra, a hippo, and two lemurs travel across Europe in order to get back home in Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.
