With filming set to begin this month in the UK, Benicio Del Toro has been added to the cast list of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in a leading role. According to Deadline the actor has a multi-picture deal which means we can expect him to pop up in a few Marvel movies in the future.
The initial reaction suggests Del Toro may be playing Thanos, the Mad Titan who was behind the Chitauri Earth invasion in The Avengers. We saw him in a brief end credits scene, but there’s strong indication that he’ll have a strong presence in the Marvel universe going forward. Thanos has a connection to most of the main characters in Guardians of the Galaxy, and he may even end up being the main villain in The Avengers 2.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of superhuman and extra-terrestrial adventurers dedicated to the safeguarding of the Milky Way Galaxy from any force that threatens the security or liberty of its various people.
The team includes their leader Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer (a resurrected superhuman warrior and nemesis of Thanos), Groot (a plant monster who can control trees), Gamora (a dangerous female assassin who has a preference for knives and swords) and Rocket Racoon (a genetically altered racoon who can fly a plane and carries a laser pistol).
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista lead the cast, with Lee Pace (The Hobbit) and Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) playing villains and Glenn Close playing the head of the Nova Corps. The film is scheduled to open August 2014.
