Well this looks interesting. One might think a big budget Ben Stiller comedy opening on Christmas Day would be wacky and broad, but based on the trailer for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, this looks more like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind than it does Night at the Museum.
Between the music by the Icelandic indie/folk pop band “Of Monsters and Men” and the subdued pace, this almost looks more like an independent film than it does a holiday tentpole. Not to mention, the movie is being co-distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, a small studio who’ve only been involved with indies thus far. Ben Stiller has proven to be a pretty talented director, especially with his handling of the action sequences in Tropic Thunder. That shot in the trailer of him flying out a window is actually pretty impressive CGI.
A remake of the 1947 fantasy of the same name, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty tells the story of a timid magazine photo manager who lives life vicariously through daydreams until he embarks on a true-life adventure when a negative goes missing.
