If you’ve never seen Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise or Before Sunset, do yourself a favor and rectify that as soon as possible. Those two movies are about as perfect as romantic films can be, shying away from the eye-roll inducing cliches of godawful romantic comedies and instead concentrating on excellent performances, a naturalistic style, and real chemistry between leads Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. There has long been talk of a third movie to round out the indie trilogy, but now Hawke gives fans of the series reason to be excited by saying the third movie shoots this summer. Read on for more.
Hawke told Indiewire:
We’re also doing a follow-up to “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset,” so that will be fun. We’re going to shoot that this summer…??I’ve gotten into trouble, so I’m sworn to secrecy. The biggest change between this one and the last one is the Internet. The first time we did it, we didn’t have any pressure; nobody gave a shit.
We really don’t like covering mushy romantic stuff here on Filmonic, but this is one of the rare exceptions that I would highly recommend to anyone, even people who traditionally hate movies like this. It’s a solid drama that has a completely unique feel, and I’m excited about seeing where these characters go in another story. The second film was made nine years after the first one, and the film’s story took place nine years after the events of the first movie, too. This is a very personal “franchise” for Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy, so they wouldn’t be coming back if they didn’t have a good story to tell.
