Avatar re-release date set

avatar trailer Earlier this year James Cameron said that 20th Century Fox may be looking to re-release Avatar on 3D screens after all the summer blockbusters are out of the way. Alice in Wonderland, which was released in March, took over all the 3D screens after Avatar claimed them for 2 straight months. Apparently Avatar could have made another few hundred million if it still had them all to itself.

Now 20th Century Fox has announced that the highest grossing film of all time will be re-released on Digital 3D and IMAX 3D on August 27th with over 8 minutes of never before seen footage.

Here are the re-release dates for other countries:

BELGIUM 8 SEPTEMBER 2010
RUSSIA 26 AUGUST 2010
SPAIN 17 SEPTEMBER 2010
UK 27 AUGUST 2010
AUSTRALIA 26 AUGUST 2010
INDIA 27 AUGUST 2010
JAPAN 16 OCTOBER 2010
SOUTH KOREA 16 SEPTEMBER 2010
MEXICO 15 OCTOBER 2010
ARGENTINA 16 SEPTEMBER 2010

No word on how long it will be on screens for this time, however as the film currently sits at $2.7 billion worldwide they may be aiming for the $3 billion mark, at least.

Will 8 minutes of unseen footage spur you to see Avatar on the big screen again?

i saw it normal and was dying to see it in 3D but never got around to it..so this works for me :P.

I have not even watched the movie yet … hard to belive :) So no big screen for me … just does not peak my interest!

You don’t know what you’re missing. I have never recommended a movie to anyone other than people I know but I would recommend this to anyone, especially if you get the chance to see it in 3D. Normally I would say that 3D is just a marketing scheme but with this movie, it SIGNIFICANTLY added to the movie. I won’t ruin it by telling you too much about it, but the scenery in this movie was AMAZING and seeing in in 3D made it all that much more beautiful. The floating mountains were brilliant in 3D. Obviously, I watched it in 3D but I’ve also seen it on DVD and there is just no comparison, 3D is A LOT better. I WILL be seeing it again when it comes to theaters. I have NEVER paid to see a movie in theaters more than once in my life. I will also be buying the DVD when it’s released in 3D. If you get the chance to see it in 3D, do it. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

    oh yes, count me in!

  • raid6

Actually thinking of flying to Australia to see it one day earlier. This movie is like drama heroin.

  • Rectg

absolutely, get to see it in imax 3d again..fuck yea

  • patientskeptic

Yes, I will see the film again on the big screen.

  • EVO

I missed the IMAX version of it; fell in love with the 3D and could have kicked myself in the butt for not seeing the super sized version afterwards. I won't miss it again 8 minutes or not!

  • Dodger

Oh hell yes, I will be there! Probably a few times. At least I have Predators to hold me over until the end of August :)

  • Xkr1975

Yes, absolutely, I can't wait for the re-release, even though I've seen the movie 58 times already! Avatar is the greatest movie ever made.

  • Jackscure

The fact that this movie didn't win the Oscar for Best Picture was the biggest travesty in Hollywood history. I will never watch the Oscars again. For Cameron to top Titanic and not get rewarded for it was ..well, I'll say it again…a travesty.

People who have seen it once and LOVE it should protest and not go see it again. I feel terrible that they will market such an AWESOME movie like a piece of bargaining chip! What a sad way to squeeze money out of those who love the movie…So please- if you loved the movie- you owe it to the Movie to protest and not let them commerialize every last bit of beauty out of this film. Demand a proper DVD release with all the additional scenes and special features. the fans already gave them SO MUCH- it's their turn to give us back.

    • TommyKnockerz

What, may I ask, is you major malfunction? Does it really matter if they re-release it? Commercializing is just a part of the movie business. I don’t see how it detracts from the movie in any way. They have already released the DVD so you can get that and if you have such a problem with the re-release in theaters, DON’T GO, but I’m going to. There is no comparison. Seeing this in theaters is significantly better than seeing it in your living room so you can say what you want about the “commercialization” of the film, but to suggest to people to essentially boycott the movie is just stupid. By the way, if you think boycotting a movie is a good idea, you’re dumber than you appear. This is a business, like it or not, and if they don’t make money, they won’t make movies. Let me see if I can explain it so someone with an IQ as low as yours can understand it. Movie + Money = MORE MOVIES Movie + NO Money = NO MORE MOVIES Don’t be an idiot. If you liked the movie in 3D, GO SEE IT. If you’d rather stick to you moronic ideals, DON’T go see it but I GUARANTEE that you posting some half assed comment here IS NOT going to make any difference whatsoever in the number of people who see this movie when it’s re-released.

NOW MY SUGGESTION…….If you haven’t seen it in 3D, I would HIGHLY recommend you go see it. It was an AMAZING movie. Normally I would never recommend a movie to anyone other than someone I know unless asked, but I HIGHLY recommend this one. Also, every movie I’ve ever seen in 3D, the 3D was just a gratuitous marketing ploy. That isn’t the case with this movie. You don’t have anything flying at your face to make you jump or scare you. With this movie it definitely added an incredible aspect to the movie. The scenery was incredible and seeing it without the 3D aspect just doesn’t do it justice. I’ve seen it both ways now and the 3D version is A LOT better.

    yes

I loved Avatar. I saw it on a terrible 7″ portable DVD player the first time around, so I'm itching to see it in 3D in a movie theater. James Cameron shot for the moon with this movie, and ended up hitting Pandora trying.

  • Kris

The itself is great, one of the best movies of 2009. But, no I refuse to see Avatar 1.1 in theaters. Why? Because this is nothing than a business ploy. Does every director who wants to add footage to their films get a re-release of their “director's cut”…NO. A good 99.999% percent of studios just put out a new edition of the dvd or blu ray. The only reason they are doing this because Avatar is the top grossing movie of all time and well if people loved it in theaters before, they'll love it again. My advice, wait a few more months for the special edition blu ray and enjoy it on your HD TV and surround sound. I bet they will try to pump it out by Christmas and make another several hundred million on dvd/blu ray sales. Oh and Cameron, Put some damn special features on the disc this time around!!!

  • matt

It was bad enough at its current (overly long) running time!

  • Archaic

    Yep.

  • Daniellon

Why not? At least I'll have another chance to watch a real TRUE 3D film after all those other fake 2Ds masquerading as 3Ds.

  • Garrickbrewer

I say the movie in december, bought the DVD the first day it came out. I will camp out infront of the movie theatre for this release. I will be there on opening day. It will take god himself to not get me to be there.

This movie is like drama heroin.

  • Veronica

You can count me in a few times!!!

  • Kronos

Any of you who are not pleased its being re-released bear this in mind. Avatar inflation adjusted is NOT the biggest worldwide movie of all time. However with this new release it should get there because it only needs another 300 mil or so to beat gone with the wind.
Since it hit the 1.5 bil mark I hoped it would do it but eventually fell just short because it was prematurely yanked out of 3D cinemas.
