Avatar overtakes Return of the King

avatar neytiriBy the end of today James Cameron’s Avatar will have grossed more than $1,119,110,941, and will therefore take the #2 highest grossing film spot held by The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. This means that Cameron is indeed ‘King of the World’, and now possibly ‘King of the Galaxy’ as he is the only director to have two films gross over $1 billion worldwide.

Avatar‘s box office gross was given a boost with it’s release in China earlier this week, where it broke the opening day record with 33 million yuan (4.8 million dollars). According to a spokesman for distributor China Film Group Corporation Avatar will likely surpass 2012 as the highest-grossing film of all time in China. 2012 made 460 million yuan ($67.3 million) last year.

Can Avatar make another $700 million and overtake Titanic?

    at the rate this movie is going i think if not, it will be a close call of reaching Titanic. Especially now that it is number 2 on the list. It's going to be interesting too when it's released on Home Media, i think majority of people will be purchasing it on Blu-Ray since around me after Christmas i noticed a lot more people in the Blu-Ray aisle so people are switching over :D. Avatar may possibly be the best movie to date to see on Blu-Ray..but we have to wait for it :[

    Definitely betting on Avatar surpassing Titanic. Much more important message that goes straight to the root of our heart and soul… we are connected to everything and everyone. That's the wake up call the world wants to hear, even if subconsciously, it's the deeper Truth.

    It's going to stand at 1.3 billion worldwide by the end of this week so I'd say Titanic is toast. To get that extra 500 million Avatar will need an extra 3-4 weeks more.

    Thats an imaginable collection. The movie was real good. Just a little less than Titanic which still remains in our heart. Heard he’s starting for the sequel for Avatar. Another record breaking film on the way.

    Wow. Two films grossing over a billion. That is great.. I must watch this movie. I have not watched it yet. I also heard Avatar 2 is coming..
