James Cameron hasn’t officially stated what his next project will be, however it is looking likely that he will be heading straight back to Pandora with Avatar 2 (which he says won’t be called Avatar 2). Last month Cameron revealed that the sequel will explore the oceans on Pandora, and now the director has hinted that 20th Century Fox will be setting an official release date soon.
Cameron also said he intends to personally dedicate himself to helping the industry adopt 3-D without creating a consumer backlash.
That will include continuing to create quality 3-D content, like a sequel to “Avatar,” which he estimated will take about 3 years to make — 18 months less than it took the first.
The release date will be announced in a few months, he said.
If the plan was to start filming Avatar 2 sometime next year then we could be seeing the sequel in 2013 or 2014. I suspect Fox will be aiming for a December release again as that worked quite well for them last time. We’ll find out the specifics in the upcoming months.
