James Cameron and 20th Century Fox are planning to shoot the next three Avatar movies simultaneously. We’ve known for a while that Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 would be shot back-to-back, but now Cameron and Fox have added Avatar 4 to the mix. The films will open December 2016, December 2017, and December 2018.
To help with getting three huge movies made Cameron has set Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise Of Planet Of The Apes) and Shane Salerno (Fantastic Voyage) to help write the films.
Here’s what James Cameron had to say in the press release:
“Building upon the world we created with AVATAR has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that AVATAR’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I’m pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh — all writers I’ve long admired - to join me in completing the films screenplays.”
20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos said:
“We at the studio have no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of AVATAR. The growing breadth and scale of Jim Cameron’s plans for his magnificent fantasy worlds continue to amaze us all.”
Avatar made over $2.7 billion worldwide when it was released back in 2009. It changed the industry completely, and is responsible for all of these 3D movies we’ve had since. Filming 3 movies at the same time is an ambitious challenge, but if Peter Jackson can do it so can Jim Cameron.
