Following speculation that Ryan Gosling was in talks to join Disney’s The Lone Ranger earlier this month, Deadline has word that The Social Network actor Armie Hammer is now in talks to play the title character.
It could just turn out to be nothing like the Gosling speculation, but Hammer is in demand at the moment so it’s a possibility. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is signed on to direct the movie, which could start shooting later this year, and Johnny Depp is set to play the Ranger’s Native American companion Tonto.
Here’s the synopsis for the old draft of the script written by Pirates scribes Ted Elliott’s and Terry Rossio’s, although new writer Justin Haythe may have re-written it or just started anew:
The Texas Rangers chase down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, but the gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.
Armie Hammer will soon begin filming Relativity’s Snow White movie alongside Julia Roberts. Hammer will play Prince Andrew Alcott, while Roberts will play the Evil Queen. The actor will also be seen in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.
