Speculation abound over at ComicBookMovie.com, where a number of inside sources suggest that the Skrull (an alien species) will feature as villains in The Avengers.
If you wanna stay clean, don’t be reading these further details! Apparently the Skrull (who are “extraterrestrial shapeshifters”) will brainwash the Hulk into an angry, evil force who will unleash his rage on Earth. This would be in replacement of Loki, who did the same to the Hulk in the comic books. The Skrull will not engage in an large-scale invasion of Earth, however – that would take place in a potential Avengers 2.
Personally, while yes, that is how things play out in the comics, I’ve never really wanted the Hulk to be a villain in this. I wanted to see him team up with Thor, Captain American and Iron Man (but perhaps he will later?). And if he did act as an opposing force to the Avengers themselves, I’d rather he did it of his own decision, rather than being controlled by aliens. But that doesn’t matter, as I’m sure the film is gonna be awesome anyway. Let’s just hope they include the villains in the film more than they included Whiplash in Iron Man 2.
In addition, further to rumours that actor Kevin Pennington was cast as a character called “Noh-Varr,” ComicBookMovie.com suggests that the Skrull’s enemies, the Kree, will also appear in The Avengers, as allies to Earth. So it seems as though there’s gonna be a lot more sci-fi than has already been present in the three released films set in the universe. I love the idea of setting up the characters, connecting the films together in various small ways, and then bringing it all together. I just hope The Avengers lives up to the large foundations it’s being given.
