Ah, Christmas. ‘Tis the season to see a bunch of promiscuous teenagers get sliced to bits by a maniac wearing a Santa outfit. For such a beloved holiday, Christmas sure has spawned a lot of cynical horror movies. Join us as we look back at some of the most memorable ho-ho-horror movies of Christmas.
5. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale
When you really stop and think about the Santa mythos, it’s kinda creepy. A man who’s existed for centuries flies around the world, slipping into homes under cover of night, rewarding good children and punishing the naughty. The Finnish horror film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale takes the “Santa is actually super creepy” idea and runs with it.
In the movie, a group of reindeer herders come upon a desecrated burial mound upon a mountain. Turns out the inhabitant of the burial mound isn’t as dead as you would think. Also, it’s Santa Claus. Turns out loveable old St. Nick is an immortal supernatural being with a thirst for reindeer blood and an urge to punish the naughty. Santa is genuinely creepy, and Rare Exports does a great job of turning the holiday into a skin crawling, horrifying affair.
