Warner Bros. has once again changed the title of the upcoming 300 sequel. The film was originally called Xerxes, then it became 300: The Battle of Artemisia, and now it is 300: Rise of an Empire
The film is based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel that takes Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and turns him into more of a pivotal figure. He’s a man in search of godhood after the death of his father, who died battling an Athenian warlord named Themistocles. The story takes place over the course of several years, but the focal point is the Battle of Artemisium, which took place around the same time as The Battle of Thermopylae which we saw in 300.
Eva Green (Casino Royale) will play Artemisia, a ruthless, gold-covered goddess who persuades Xerxes to amass his army and helps lead them into battle. Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) will play Themistocles.
Noam Murro (Smart People) is directing, and production is currently under-way. Warner Bros. has set a release date for August 2, 2013.
