USA Today got their hands on our first look at 300: Rise of an Empire which is set around the same time as Zack Snyder’s 300. The images show the film will have a similar look to the original film, however we can expect to see a whole new choreography of fighting and war as a good portion of the film takes place out at sea.
The film is based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel that takes Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and turns him into more of a pivotal figure. He’s a man in search of godhood after the death of his father, who died battling an Athenian warlord named Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton). The story takes place over the course of several years, but the focal point is the Battle of Artemisium, which took place around the same time as The Battle of Thermopylae which we saw in 300.
Eva Green (Casino Royale) will play Artemisia, a ruthless, gold-covered goddess who persuades Xerxes to amass his army and helps lead them into battle. Noam Murro (Smart People) is directing and and said “the few against the many is still here, it’s hundreds vs. hundreds of thousands. It’s about taking on the mightiest power of all with wisdom and tactics.”
and Warner Bros. has set a release date for August 2, 2013.
