2. GTA IV
This would make an amazing two or three-part crime epic. Or a TV series. The exaggerated, humorous take on New York City is full of character and is a great setting to contain the gritty, violent (but occasionally over-the-top) story, which at its core is about the illusion that is “the American Dream.” Niko’s story of revenge is a hugely gripping one. An article on Rolling Stone’s website referred to the game as “the best popcorn movie of the summer [2008].”
Obviously the sandbox, go-around-and-kill-whoever-you-want aspect of Grand Theft Auto IV is absolutely key to the game, and would be made redundant in a film – but it has a superb story that could have enough additions to it that would make it a different experience to the game, while maintaining its key plot elements (naturally). The memorable characters could be brought to life even more, particularly if an adaptation borrowed from expansion packs The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Little Jacob, Brucie and Yusuf Amir (voiced by Omid Djalili) spring to mind. I would kill to see Djalili portraying that character in live-action. A GTA IV movie could take place in a middle-ground – all-out action, fun and humour on one side; the level of detail of shows like The Shield or The Wire on the other. And it could be wonderful.
